Bessie’s Best started when one struggling, yet determined mama, Jen, refused to give up on breastfeeding because of low milk supply. It wasn’t until baby #2 and a lot of education that she learned the amazing benefits of lactation cookies. With a toddler in tow, they started baking and sharing their own homemade lactation cookies, without fenugreek. These cookies quickly made their way to struggling moms across the country and world.
Today, Bessie’s Best is run by an amazing team of moms just like you! Our founding mama, Jen, says it best, “The only feeling in the world better than successfully breastfeeding my baby is helping hundreds of mothers successfully breastfeed theirs.”

What we found with other lactation cookies and lactation treats lacked in one VERY particular and important ingredient – the taste! Let’s be honest – as a sometimes desperate breastfeeding mom, we would all choke down any food, no matter the taste, if it helped our baby get the milk they need. But why suffer if you don’t have to? Both mom and baby can be happy while eating Bessie’s because they’re truly homemade and delicious while being nutritious, allergy sensitive – and getting you that increase in milk supply that you crave! Don’t eat cardboard when you can have treats so good that you MAY just have to hide them from your other half.

Every body is different, but we are so proud that our product has truly helped so many mamas to achieve their breastfeeding goals. Jen created this product because she needed them for herself and got the results she was looking for – a lot more milk! But when she shared with others, and they also increased their milk supply, she knew she couldn’t keep them to herself. For lactation treats that truly work and taste great, we include galactagogues, a substance that improves milk supply, as the main ingredient(s) in our cookies and granola. Not only are these ingredients going to help support your milk supply, but they’re healthy for mom and baby while you breastfeed.
Flaxseed is incorporated into all of our lactation products and is a power-punch for milk-boosting. Naturally occurring phytoestrogens, which have estrogenic properties that may increase milk supply. Not to mention it’s an all-around nutritious food!
Brewer’s yeast acts as a probiotic and encourages gut health while also contributing to a better milk supply. On its own, brewer’s yeast has a bitter quality to it, but Bessie’s secret recipes give you the boost to your milk supply with no weird aftertaste.
Oatmeal is another well-known galactagogue that we use, and it also provides a ton of nutrients and minerals. Did you know that our cookies contain no flour - it’s all OAT! So, when you’re looking for the most bang for your buck, a soft and chewy Bessie’s cookie has the power you need.
No Fenugreek.
Many moms have given up on their attempt to increase supply because they don’t like the side effects of fenugreek for them or their babies. We use alternatives such as brewer’s yeast, flax seeds, and oatmeal instead.

Once upon a time…. I was a new momma who thought breastfeeding would come easily and naturally. With my first child, I was uneducated and lacked support, but certainly not determination! My first lasted 11 weeks, which for me was an accomplishment because of my low milk supply.
Two years later with baby #2, I was ready. Equally as determined but FAR more educated. This time, I did my homework on low milk supply, which is much more common than I had realized. I joined nursing mom support groups. I learned the importance of ‘nursing on demand.’ Lastly, I fully utilized the lactation consultant at the local hospital’s support group to support my breastfeeding goals: latching, tips, and more. Despite my readiness for breastfeeding with my second baby, I still struggled with low milk supply! I agonized weekly to my mommy-friends in my group and that was my first introduction to lactation cookies.
After my lactation consultant recommended buying cookies, I instead decided to make them myself. Luckily, I had an active and involved two-year-old who loved to help mommy. We started to experiment in the kitchen with our own milk-making cookies. My baking assistant (aka my 2-year-old) was ready to help- dump, mix, stir and bake. These cookies were not only delicious, but they worked! Soon my friends wanted some. And then their friends. Eventually, someone suggested that I should put it on Facebook to be able to help even more moms and…
Bessie’s Best was Born!
Now, I am a mom of three amazing kids. Our Bessie’s Best team is better than ever. We are moms, grandmoms and future moms that choose to be here for moms every day. We are all passionate about helping you make more milk for breastfeeding your little one. We have built Bessie’s on word of mouth, and we will continue to help as many moms have a successful breastfeeding journey – no matter what that looks like for them. I wish a momma would have told me to get these before I gave birth! They boosted my milk supply when it was coming in and it’s a great snack for when I know my milk supply is getting low. I wanted to give up pumping and breastfeeding many times and these kept me going months longer than planned. They WORK. My production would increase every time I’d eat one first thing when I woke up before power pumping. I’d produce roughly 1-2 ounces more than usual. Which is a big deal for me. And I looked forward to eating them they are SO delicious.

I was struggling to make milk only able to pull out 2 oz after a pump session so decided to try these cookies out. I was going to give up if these didn’t work bc I tried everything. I ate three of these as soon as they came in. I heated them up in the microwave for a few seconds they tasted warm and gooey as if they were just baked. So delicious and enjoyable. Later that evening i was pulling six oz. I was so happy! If you’re thinking of trying these just do it. They are great. Literally a win win win. Tasty treat, more milk, happier baby.

These tasty treats really help. I don't notice an increase in production the first pump after eating one but the second and third pumps I fill my Medela 5oz bottles to the top from both sides within 10 or 15 minutes! I would highly recommend giving these a try.

A: Aside from BlockBusters and Lactation Ranch Pretzels, all the oats used in our products are fundamentally gluten-free; however, the oats are processed in a facility that once contained wheat.
Our lactation goodies also contain brewer’s yeast. Brewer’s yeast is a byproduct of the beer making process and can contain trace amounts of gluten from the barley used to make the beer. A majority of mamas are still able to consume our products if they (or baby) have a gluten sensitivity because of the minute amount potentially remaining in our finalized products.

Our Lactation Granola is already vegan! If any of the fruit or nut mix-ins are a dietary concern of yours, you are in luck! We also offer a customizable Made To Order Lactation Granola where you can choose what you put in it.

A: Our Lactation Cookies typically last about 3 weeks, at which point they will start to dry. #MomHack – When storing cookies use an airtight container with a piece of bread to help soften them up! You can also freeze cookies in a ziploc, and let them thaw overnight whenever you’re ready to consume!
Our granola and pretzels are good for up to 6 months. All other products should be consumed as soon as possible, and frozen if unable to be consumed within a week of delivery.

A: We recommend starting with three Lactation Cookies. Everyone’s body responds differently, so it will take some time to see what your needs are – some moms need more, others less. If you need more, try adding an additional cookie or two as an afternoon snack.
Though people don’t typically rely on the granola or pretzels for a boost alone, we recommend about ¼ cup of Granola or Pretzels is comparable to one Lactation Cookie.

A: If your ducts are already clogged, we recommend starting with six BlockBusters per day and adjusting from there as needed; for prevention, we recommend three per day. Once you’ve busted those blocked ducts and are feeling ready to cut back, make sure to do so slowly over time to reduce the risk of a relapse.

A: Some moms see results within a day or two; for others, it takes a week of eating 2-5 cookies etc. per day. You will need to experiment and allow some time to observe your results.
